Artists for Peace

Artists for Peace

Artists for Peace is a collaborative endeavor of performing artists of all types to present performances of socially conscious work with the intent of raising funds for organizations that promote peace and social justice.  Born out of the controversy surrounding the atrocities of the Iraq War, Artists for Peace gave its first performance in the Spring of 2005 amidst thousands of shoppers in the Stamford Mall in Connecticut.

This year Artists for Peace is supporting KIVA, a non profit organization whose goal is alleviating poverty through “loans that change lives.”

Kiva

KIVA connects those who can lend, in amounts as little as $25, to entrepreneurs in developing nations and has lent nearly $52 million so far.  Using a “Match.com” approach, lenders select the particular person/group that they want to help—opportunities are diverse ranging from metal shops in Kenya to weavers in Peru to farmers in Cambodia.  As opposed to pouring a donation into an imaginary bank, one actually sees the people one is loaning to, makes a connection and hears about how the loan helped to turn a life around.  After the loan is used, the monies are returned and the lender can endow another beneficiary.

Our History

Born out of the controversy surrounding the atrocities of the Iraq War, Artists for Peace gave its first performance in the Spring of 2005 amidst thousands of shoppers in the Stamford Mall in Connecticut.

2005
Artists for Peace joined forces with Peace Action of Connecticut in August 2005 to raise funds for the humanitarian crisis in Darfur.  Funds were donated to Americares to deliver relief supplies to the war torn region.
2006
In April, 2006 AFP and Peace Action raised money for the Norwalk based Youth Empowerment Support-YES.  YES is a program to provide guidance and problem solving skills for youth attending the five Norwalk Housing Authority Learning Centers.
2007
AFP donated funds from its 2007 concert to Jewish World Watch for the purchase of 280 solar cookers for the women living in refugee camps in Chad.  The Darfur refugees must roam further each day in search of wood for cooking fires.  Outside the limited safty of refugee camps women fall easy prey to the Janjaweed militia patrols with their agenda of ethnic cleansing and genocide.  Solar Cookers make these forays outside the sanctuary of the camps unnecessary, safeguarding the refugee women and the children that depend on them.
2008
In 2008, Artists for Peace expanded to two venues -- Norwalk, Ct and NYC and focused on veterans, their stories, experiences and the challenges they face.    ‘Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace’, a compilation of veteran’s writings edited by Maxine Hong Kingston were incorporated into the performance.  Proceeds from the concerts were donated to Homes for the Brave, a 42 bed homeless shelter-serving veterans in Bridgeport, Ct and New Era Veteran’s Residence in Bronx, NY.
2009
The 2009 concerts will raise funds for KIVA.ORG a leader of micro lending. Kiva's mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty. Kiva is the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to unique entrepreneurs in the developing world. Artists for Peace – 2009 will be using Brenda Ray’s World Voices Project as an audio backdrop to illuminate through dance, music, imagery and spoken word the idea of the global human family in common pursuit of human rights.
